Walking to Jerusalem — WEEK 9

But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Galatians 5:22 – 23

When we think of visitors along the road, the parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10 naturally comes to mind. We can all somehow relate to the story. The Samaritan actually stopped to help the hurting person while others ignored this suffering. How often can we say we have walked past a hurting person or turned our heads away from suffering? To help the hurting often means stepping out of our comfort zones, rearranging our plans, and embodying the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. This week as you walk or exercise, you may not physically see a hurting person, but be open to the ways in which God's Spirit draws you to see others with the eyes of compassion. Pray for those you know who are suffering and allow yourself to hear God's urging you to be a healer of the world's brokenness.

Walking to Jerusalem — How it Works

  • You are encouraged to exercise at least three times per week. Keep track of either the miles or minutes you exercise and record your accomplishment each day in your Walking to Jerusalem journal.
  • Each Sunday, record your total miles for the week on our master chart in the Sanctuary, and receive a stamp and a sticker for your passport to indicate that you completed that leg of the journey. (For families or friends who walk together, add a bonus extra five miles to your total.)

One mile equals 5,280 feet. If you are using a step counter, consider that there are about 2,000 steps to every mile. To measure your stride, mark a distance of 50 feet. Divide 50 by the number of steps and that is your stride length. Next divide 5,280 by your stride length to find your average steps per mile.

  • Utilize the devotionals for each week to stimulate your thinking while you exercise. Jot down your thoughts and reflections in your journal.
  • Consider inviting others to join you in your exercise and use the time to talk about the scripture passages and devotions.
  • Join us for the final leg of our journey to Jerusalem as we come together on Sunday, August 21, for a celebration of our collective efforts.
