Currently in the works is the development of curriculum resources that will be made available to all groups staying at the Inn. These resources will be helpful to groups as they prepare to serve in the inner city, provide devotional materials for use while they are staying in the Inn, and offer them guidance for how they can continue their journey in mission once they return home.

To learn more about our Urban Mission Inn ministry go here.

Test your wits and enjoy some great fellowship at our Trivia Contest and Potluck Lunch on Sunday, Nov. 1 at Noon in the lower level Dining Room. This event is sponsored by our youth group. Participants are asked to bring canned for for our food pantry as an admission "fee" and a dish to share for lunch. Special themed gift baskets, courtesy of Johnathan Loesch, will be available by silent auction with the proceeds benefitting our outreach efforts.

For the trivia portion of the event, attendees will be invited to sit in intergenerational teams as we will be drawing questions from the pop culture of the 1930's all the way up to present day. So make sure someone on your team knows which famous movie director was once of the voice of "The Shadow" on radio and someone else knows which Pokemon has a lightning bolt for a tail!

More than 700 children, youth and adults made their way through the second annual Union Communion Ministries Back-to-School Fair Friday, August 14, 2009, at Union Avenue Christian Church. Participants were able to gather information from community service organizations, take part in health screenings, complete a back-to-school physical, walk away with supplies and a backpack for the new school year, and experience the radical hospitality of neighbors and congregations living in caring community.

Union Avenue Parish Nurse Sheila Grigsby coordinated the Fair, including arranging the logistics, coordinating the volunteer crew, scheduling physicals, and coordinating participation of a wide range of community services. Participants could learn about services available at the neighborhood Public Library, screen for exposure to unsafe levels of lead, enroll in Head Start programs, learn about the Community Garden, screen for elevated blood pressure, meet firefighters from our community, take a confidential HIV test, and have their face painted – all in one conveniently located place!

Little kids and big kids alike had a fun day at the Fair. We thank all the volunteers who contributed to making this a huge success!

Sunday, July 26, the three Union Council churches – Pilgrim Congregational UCC, Westminster Presbyterian, and Union Avenue Christian Church – will gather in Ivory Perry Park (800 Belt Avenue) to celebrate summer and worship together at 4:30 p.m. We encourage you to bring your lawn chairs and blankets and a food item or two to share for a community meal (paper products, plasticware, etc., will be provided) as we enjoy singing, scripture, communion, and creative worship together. Following worship, please stay for the free concert at 6 p.m., featuring the Ralph Butler Band.

After 25 years and more than 7,500 performances, the Ralph Butler Band is still one of the most sought after bands in the metro area for venues ranging from festivals to fairs … weddings to anniversary parties … corporate functions to college campuses.

The silky-voiced Butler is a bridge to a rich musical history that has swept younger generations into a large pool of loyal fans. Always fresh and exciting the Ralph Butler Band seamlessly blends traditional Motown sound to the most popular songs of today. That explains why after a quarter century the group continues to be acknowledged as “Public Entertainer Number One.”

Today, musicians crossing three generations, including his daughter Jessica (who is following in her father's footsteps) influence the Ralph Butler Band. “New people and new energy excite me,” says Butler who is happiest helping younger artists hone their craft and giving them a forum to explore their talents within a structure that encourages innovation, commitment and discipline.
