Talking Faith — Small Group Study

Are you interested in exploring further what it means to have a vital Christian faith? Would you value the opportunity to share your faith questions and your faith journey with others in a nurturing atmosphere? Do you wish you were more comfortable sharing with others outside the Church about your faith experiences? Then plan now to join our new small group study, Talking Faith, an eight-part series that focuses on growing and sharing your faith. Beginning on Tuesday April 5, this group will meet from 9 – 11 am weekly to share a light meal, pray, and engage their faith in lively conversation, journaling, and reflection. Each session at Union Avenue Christian Church will be led by Brent Dodge, retired pastor and member of UACC.

Scarred by Struggle, Transformed by Hope: A Book Study

Finding hope in the midst of struggle is Joan Chittister's theme in Scarred by Struggle, Transformed by Hope. Using the story of Jacob's wrestling with God and her own life-changing disappointment, Sister Joan identifies several different struggles and the gifts that come when we choose to face them. Identifying struggles such as isolation, fear, powerlessness, and vulnerability, she then illuminates the gifts of courage, individual surrender, and ultimately hope. Joan Chittister is a well-known author and lecturer. She is a sister of the Benedictine order. Studying her book together will allow us to look at the hopefulness within the struggles we encounter. This will be neither a therapy group nor a self-help group, but, rather, an opportunity to consider a theology of hope in the face of disappointment and struggle.

This study will be led by Rev. Suzanne Webb and will meet on the first three Wednesday evenings in April and the first three Wednesday evenings in May, 6 – 7:30 pm.

Where Did the Old Testament Come From?: A Bible Exploration

This three-week study will provide an insightful and engaging overview of the early history of the Old Testament canon, including a look at its origins, the earliest manuscripts, archaeology, and the influences of early Judaism. These sessions are designed to be “light” studies, not intended for scholars but for those who want to know more about the origins of the texts we claim for our faith traditions.

This study will be led by Eric Koch on the first three Wednesday nights in April, 6 – 7:30 pm.

Where Did the New Testament Come From?" A Bible Exploration

This three-week study will focus on investigating and uncovering the early history of the New Testament canon, including a look at its origins, earliest manuscripts, archaeology, and the influences of early Judaism. Again, these sessions are designed to be “light” studies, not intended for scholars but for those who want to know more about the origins of the texts we claim for our faith traditions.

This study will be led by Eric Koch on the first three Wednesday nights in May, 6 – 7:30 pm.

Journey — Taizé Worship

JOURNEY is a time of contemplative prayer and meditation in the style of Taizé. Taizé worship services will be offered on Wednesday, April 27 and Wednesday, May 25, 6:30 – 7:30 pm. These services will focus on the gifts of silence, prayer, and the singing of uncomplicated, repetitive songs to bring forth an authentic encounter with the mystery of God as revealed in Jesus the Christ.

Questions about these spiritual enrichment offerings may be directed to Brian Kirk, Director of Christian Education at Union Avenue Christian Church, by calling the church office at (314) 361-8844 or by email.
