A Holy Union In 1902 there were 10 Disciples churches in St. Louis, most of them small and “not one of them of sufficient strength to adequately represent our cause in this great city,” according to James M. Philputt, first pastor of the Union Avenue Christian Church. After considerable negotiation and many long meetings, the congregations of Central and Mt. Cabanne Christian Churches voted to merge, and on October 5, 1902, the first “business” meeting of the combined churches took place with F.E. Udell, chairman of the board of Central, chairing the meeting. The merger included the resignation of both pastors, and the choice of a new one to lead in the highly charged atmosphere that surrounded blending the two congregations. The choice was James M. Philputt, a native son of Tennessee, graduate of Indiana University, and a distinguished graduate of Union Theological Seminary in New York City. While both the official boards had decided upon this union and the majority of both congregations had voted for it, there were those who were still opposed to it or reluctant and indifferent. Dr. Philputt first declined the offer of employment and later accepted the task of securing funds, erecting a new church building, and uniting two congregations with different traditions and backgrounds into a harmonious whole. more
