Wellness and Healthy Spirituality

As a community whose members include the very young through the very old, Union Avenue Christian Church has taken intentional steps to minister to the health needs of members and friends in our community. In cooperation with the Deaconess Foundation, in 2001 a new staff position of Parish Nurse was established at Union Avenue Christian Church.

Parish nursing is a “re-invention” of Deaconess work for the 21st century. The Deaconess movement, coming out of the early Church and rekindled in Germany in the 1800's, was a recognition that the service and outreach ministries of the Church could involve more than the ordained clergy.

Union Avenue's health ministry focuses on the whole person to emphasize wellness, disease prevention and health promotion, including healthy spirituality. Care is based on the belief that health is growth toward well being and emphasizes the interrelationship of body, mind and spirit. Health is related to everything a person does, thinks, and feels and is not merely the absence of disease.

In addition to wellness programs for church members, Union Avenue also develops and sponsors programs for members of its community, including the students and teachers of Clark Accelerated Academy and Mitchell Elementary School. Programs have included working with students, teachers and community leaders to develop and maintain a community garden, healthful eating and nutrition workshops, and community health fairs.
