Food Outreach — Plugging the Gap Kenny Ritch came to Food Outreach several years ago first as a client. He then began working as a volunteer. Today, he’s a part-time employee, and the person who makes the Van Delivery Program run smoothly and efficiently. Kenny knew early on that he wanted to give back to a community that he knew all too well. Since Kenny is both an employee and client of Food Outreach he can develop relationships with clients that wouldn’t be possible otherwise. For many of the van delivery clients, he goes the extra mile and helps put the food away in their pantries. As Kenny says, “Many of ‘my clients’ don’t know where to turn. Because I’m also walking in their shoes, I offer suggestions about whom they need to contact to get other vital services they might need to stay healthy.” The Van Delivery Program has enabled Food Outreach to fulfill emergency food orders more effectively. In any given month, Kenny might have an additional 10 clients who normally would pick up their own food, but can’t for various reasons. Because of this program, these people, who might otherwise go hungry, have food to help keep them healthy and strong. In the final year that Food Outreach was housed in Union Avenue Christian Church, it served 645 clients and prepared and distributed 197,207 meals. Just four years later (2003), the organization served 1208 clients and prepared and distributed 243,552 meals.
