Food Outreach — Working Smarter to Serve More

Nearly three years ago the organization undertook an ambitious program of developing and implementing a three-year strategic plan. “A lot of energy and input went into the plan from all stakeholders,” says Greg, “with the overall goal being to provide healthy meals in the most efficient manner.” The plan was a way to chart the organization’s future. It also was intended to guide the way in which its clients were served and the scope of services provided.

“One of the main goals of the plan was to expand our geographic reach,” says Greg. “As a direct result, we now have clients that live in 105 different zip codes in Missouri and Illinois.” The plan has resulted in greater efficiency for the organization, as well. Despite continuing increases in the number of clients served, Food Outreach has managed to decrease its unit meal cost by some 15 percent. “Bottom line is that we can feed more people with the same amount of money,” explains Greg. “In other words, the investment — your investment — to our clients has a higher return.”

The vast majority of Food Outreach’s 1,200-plus clients make twice-monthly visits to its midtown facilities at 3117 Olive Street. Those clients are able to choose from a menu of frozen, prepared meals, canned goods and fresh produce. Some clients receive home delivery from a volunteer who picks up their prepared meals and groceries and deliver them once or twice a month. However, some clients — because of their remote location or other complicating factors — were not able to make the connections work to receive nutritional support from Food Outreach. That’s where the Van Delivery Program plugs the gap. more
