Union Avenue Reaching Out Into the World — Supporting the Work of Food Outreach She’s an African-American woman in her late 50s, raising her two youngest grandchildren — a three-year-old and a newborn. Her second-floor apartment is immaculately maintained with telltale signs of young children’s presence scattered about. She is oxygen dependent, which means that her body’s pulmonary system has been compromised, but she pushes on in the face of this impediment. No, she doesn’t live in North St. Louis or North St. Louis County; she lives in a rural community some distance outside the metro area. But she does have one thing in common with a growing number of African-American women living in North St. Louis and North St. Louis County — she’s HIV positive. He's a white male who lives with his wife and teenage daughter in Lincoln County, Missouri. His HIV-positive status is known in the small, tight-knit community in which he and his family live. It’s known, you see, because he has spoken out in community forums about living with HIV and AIDS. Think it can’t happen to you — he might inquire — well, think again. These are just two of the 100-plus clients served by Food Outreach through its Van Delivery Program. “We implemented this program to handle meal deliveries to people living at least 30-minutes one-way drive time from Food Outreach and in areas where we have difficulty recruiting delivery volunteers,” said Greg Lukeman, Executive Director of Food Outreach. Union Avenue Christian Church has supported the work of Food Outreach for many years, including the years in which Food Outreach prepared its meals in our kitchen and was housed on our third floor. This year, Union Avenue has responded to the HIV/AIDS crisis in our community by providing a $5000 Outreach grant to Food Outreach to partially underwrite its Van Delivery Program. Food Outreach is the only metro-St. Louis AIDS service organization solely committed to providing nutritional support to men, women and children living with HIV and AIDS. |
