Children’s Outreach Art Sale Sept. 12

Sunday Sept. 12 our Arts Group will be hosting a table selling mini works of art created by our children all through the summer.

Each of these abstract works is painted on a real canvas and will come complete with a mini easel perfect for display.

All proceeds from the sale will be used by our children to purchase winter hats and gloves for neighborhood children in need this winter.

This activity is the culmination of our summer-long study with the children on “An Attitude of Gratitude – Learning to Give Thanks.”

Sept 1 Fundraiser for Neighborhood Houses

Please plan to join Neighborhood Houses on September 1 for Art & Soul: An Art Exhibition and Music Experience.

This colorful evening will feature an exhibition of artwork by the children of Neighborhood Houses and music by Lamar Harris, RFT Music Awards winner, Best Funk/Soul/R&B (Solo Artist). The event takes place at Neighborhood Houses’ Dignity House (812 Union Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63108 – directly across the street from our church).

Tickets are just $35 and include beer, wine, appetizers, complimentary childcare, and live music by Lamar Harris. All proceeds will provide general support for Neighborhood Houses’ after-school and summer creative arts programs. An outreach to children and families of the inner city, Neighborhood Houses provides a safe, caring place for children to develop the social and academic skills they need to succeed in school and life. Children in the After-School Programs participate in educational, cultural, health and personal development activities. Other programs include day camp, residence camp, parenting classes for low-income fathers, support for young mothers, health education and screenings, thrift stores, and food pantries.

Back-2-School Fair Outreach Event Aug. 13

Union Avenue Christian Church will once again be hosting (together with Pilgrim Congregational UCC, Westminster Presbyterian, and Union Communion Ministries) a community back-to-school fair for neighborhood children, and we’re counting on your support to make it a big success. We continue to collect through August 8 the following school supplies:

loose-leaf notebook paper

spiral-bound notebook

pocket folders

#2 pencils

ink pens [black and blue]

crayons [24 count]

blunt-tipped scissors

glue sticks, erasers

three-ring binders

markers

Missouri’s Tax Free Weekend on school supplies [under $50] and school clothing [under $100] is August 6 – 8. Any and all contributions to this outreach project to our neighborhood children will be greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please contact Parish Nurse Sheila Grigsby.

IVORY PERRY PARK CONCERT SERIES

Our free 2010 Ivory Perry Park Concert series, organized by Union Communion Ministries, runs throughout the summer as an outreach to our community. The concerts are scheduled for the following dates and performers:

Mystic Voyage - Pop , Soul, Rhythm & blues – Sunday June 27 (6-8 pm)

Denise Thimes - Silky smooth jazz – Sunday July 25 (6-8 pm)

Kim Massie – A St. Louis Favorite – Sunday August 22 (6-8 pm)

All concerts are performed in Ivory Perry Park Located at 800 Belt Avenue. You are invited to bring lawn chairs or a blankets and join in on this family and community friendly event each month. Food will be on sale and there will be free activities for children. See more information here.

History of this Event: The Ivory Perry Park Concert Series was born out of a desire to showcase talented St. Louis musicians, to bring life back to an urban park, and to involve the community in the process. In 2003, three nearby church (Union Avenue Christian Church, Pilgrim Congregational Church – United Church of Christ, and Westminster Presbyterian Church) teamed up with newly elected alderman Frank Williamson to begin working on the first Ivory Perry Park Concert Series. Other community organizations such as SPUD (the Skinker, Page, Union, Delmar Association), neighborhood stabilization officers, the Union Avenue Association, and many local businesses quickly came on board with their support. Four local schools – Clark Accelerated Academy, Mitchell Elementary School, The New City School, and Soldan International Studies High School – also have supported the development of the Series.

This project is a cooperative effort of the UCC and Disciples of Christ in metro St. Louis. The goal is to raise $10,000 to be donated to Global Ministries to help with Haiti relief. Doors open and a silent auction begins at 6:30 pm. Intermission will include free refreshments, the chance to purchase items from Haiti via Plowsharing Crafts , and an opportunity to meet our performers. Tickets are $10 and are available by calling 314-845-3764.
