Years of Growth By 1932, membership in Union Avenue Christian Church had grown to 1,760 members, and more than 700 were enrolled in church school. Beginning in the 1930s, Our Church featured a weekly column titled, “Church-School Workshop,” that highlighted activities and programs in the church’s education department. The weekly column fanned the flames of the intense competition that was waged by the adult classes to hold the top attendance prize. The January 19, 1940, edition reported that “The Fellowship Class [for whom the Fellowship Room is named] held the attendance lead over the other adult classes again last Sunday, making two straight Sundays for these couples who occupy the south parlor. To be exact, they had 69 present. Those present enjoyed a flute solo by John Carlson, who was accompanied by Lou Ellen Barr [Ben Barr’s cousin]. The Cornerstone Couples made second place with 57; the Keystone Class numbered 45; Interpreters 28; Men 19; Mary and Martha 17; Women 15, and Business Women 5.” In that same issue, the Interpreters were singled out for their fine work. The Interpreters Class was primarily comprised of young married couples at the time. “‘Build the Church Through Youth’ was the slogan of the Interpreters Class at the Annual Meeting a week ago Wednesday night, and the Interpreters are well living up to this slogan. This fine class which began with three couples five years ago [1935] has expanded to a membership of eighty husbands and wives; and the children now number forty-three.” In 1952 when George and Elizabeth Caroland arrived in St. Louis with their young family, the Interpreters Class was identified as the appropriate adult Sunday school class for the ordained Disciples minister and his bride. Elizabeth recalls that the members of the church often said that “the Interpreters filled the nursery” during the post-war years. Many of the women and men who will be returning to Union Avenue this Sunday (June 6) for the CYF reunion are children of Interpreters. The class was folded into the Homebuilders in 1995. more Sunday morning worship @ 10:45 a.m. • Christian Education for all ages @ 9:30 a.m. |
