A Great Church Enterprise One need only look to the earliest editions of Our Church to gauge the historical importance of Christian education in the life of Union Avenue Christian Church. Headlines in these early editions included: “Encourage the Teachers,” “The Making of a Teacher,” “Do You Believe in Religious Education,” and “Making Our School Evangelistic” — and that’s just some of the stories that appeared in the first two editions! In the first edition of Our Church, published on August 27, 1926, Christian education received front-page coverage under the headline, “Religious Education in Union Avenue.” “Religious Education may be said to consist of that process, which by approved educational methods, produces a development in the individual of religious ideals and impulses,” wrote H.B. Holloway. The responsibility for imparting religious education rests primarily with the church, Mr. Holloway explained. “Some of the aims of religious education might be stated as follows: (1) To impart knowledge of God and His purposes; (2) To secure spiritual development; (3) To train for membership in the Church; (4) To train for leadership in the Church; and (5) To train for the responsibilities of Christian and world citizenship.” In the next week’s issue of Our Church, once again right there on the front page, Mr. Searcy wrote on the subject of recognizing the church school as a great church enterprise. In it, he wrote, “Are we going to say: ‘Well, Mr. Holloway is a very able superintendent, and he has some very able assistants in Mr. Frye, Mrs. Hodgdon, Mr. Fowler [father-in-law of Irene Fowler, UACC’s current chair of the Christian Education Department], Mr Royse and Mrs. Clemmer, and there is Dr. Campbell, a great power when committed to an idea, and there is also Mr. Book, who has come as our Director of Religious Education to relieve us of everything we don’t want to do. They will work out the plan and will make it go, and I shall have no responsibility.” Not on your life, Mr. Searcy charged! It takes willingness and commitment and loyalty and cooperation to forge an effective program of religious education. It takes the whole church pulling in the same direction, Mr. Searcy urged, to “indeed say that ‘The Church is taking up the Task.’” more Sunday morning worship @ 10:45 a.m. • Christian Education for all ages @ 9:30 a.m. |
