Placing People in the Right Place It was during the pastorate of Dr. George A. Campbell that Union Avenue hired its first “educational director.” Dr. Campbell received a recommendation from a gentleman in Memphis commending Abbott Book as “the best educational director in the brotherhood.” Mr. Book joined Union Avenue in 1926 and served for 15 years. Mr. Book was “a good judge of people and put the right person in the right place. Under his administration, the Sunday school rapidly grew, and Mr. Book gave others the credit.” In 1935 a young woman named Marguerite DeJarnett [Frank] arrived in St. Louis to attend “business school.” She was a recent high-school graduate and her family, who lived near Hermann, Missouri, had sent her to St. Louis to continue her education. Marguerite had grown up in the Christian Church and she immediately identified Union Avenue Christian Church as her new church home. On one of her earliest visits to Union Avenue Mr. Book approached young Marguerite and persuaded her that her talents were needed in the church school’s kindergarten class. For the next 40-plus years, she was a fixture in the church’s Sunday school — teaching, nurturing and loving the young children of Union Avenue. Other current members of Union Avenue who spent many years teaching and working with the children and youth of the church include Elizabeth Caroland, Marty Cramer, Irene Fowler and Guin Stemmler. For many, many years, the first person young parents were greeted by in the church nursery was Ethel Stock. Her charge was to care for and see to the needs of the church’s youngest and most precious assets. more Sunday morning worship @ 10:45 a.m. • Christian Education for all ages @ 9:30 a.m. |
