In the Beginning…There Was Sunday School In the beginning there was Sunday school. And the elders of the church saw that it was good. And the people of the church divided themselves into groups to study the word of God — the children going with the children; the youth going with the youth; the young adults going with the young adults; and the adults going with the adults. And God’s Spirit swept among them and their numbers grew, and their interests became more diverse, and they shared their interpretation of God’s word with others, and God was pleased. This is about all we know of the earliest Christian Education efforts of Union Avenue Christian Church. Very little can be pieced together about the first meetings in the “superb modern Sunday school building,” described by Dr. James M. Philputt, Union Avenue’s first pastor. Mr. W. Davies Pittman was the first Superintendent of the church’s Sunday school. He served just one year, 1904, and nothing is written about his tenure in Dr. Philputt’s memoirs. All that exists to document his service to Union Avenue is a framed black-and-white portrait with a brass-plaque inscription. J.J. Searcy succeeded Mr. Pittman as Sunday school superintendent. He served the church from 1905 through 1926. “For more than 20 years J.J. Searcy was the devoted and able superintendent of the school,” Dr. Philputt wrote, “and to him and his efficient wife are due in no small measure its growth, modern spirit, and up-to-the-minute methods of work.” It was during his tenure that Union Avenue initiated baby dedications upon Mr. Searcy’s recommendation. more Sunday morning worship @ 10:45 a.m. • Christian Education for all ages @ 9:30 a.m. |
