Reel Faith

REEL FAITH is part of Union Avenue Christian Church’s ongoing ministry of the arts in which we examine the intersection between faith and film. It offers a perfect opportunity to invite family, friends, and neighbors to experience the fellowship and artistic stimulation to be shared in caring community.
Join us for a new slate of monthly presentations of theatrical films and documentaries that explore themes of life and faith. All films will be shown in the Fellowship Room beginning at 7 p.m. A short conversation follows each film. As always, the popcorn is free!
Some of our recent showings have included:
Young @ Heart - Coldplay, the Clash, The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix will never sound the same again after seeing the Young@Heart chorus, a group of Massachusetts senior citizens who thrill audiences worldwide with their unusual — and unusually poignant — covers of rock songs. This funny, humane, and heartwarming documentary follows the elderly ensemble as they prepare their latest public concert. (PG)
Chocolat - Set in 1950s France, a free-thinking single mother (Juliette Binoche) and her young daughter move into a peaceful seaside village and open an uncommon chocolate shop during the height of Lent — directly across the street from the church. The shop’s sensuous desserts scandalize the town until the villagers (including Johnny Depp) learn to savor the sweetness of life. (PG-13)
The Mission - In the mid-18th century, a Jesuit missionary (Jeremy Irons) establishes a church in the hostile jungles of Brazil, but he finds his work converting the rain forest natives threatened by greed and political forces among his superiors. Robert DeNiro is a heartless soldier who persuades the priest to oversee his penance and conversion to the clergy. Nominated for 7 Oscars. (PG)
Lars and the Real Girl - A delusional but kind loner (Ryan Gosling) buys a life-size doll over the internet and promptly falls in love with her, introducing the doll to others as his platonic girlfriend. His family, the townspeople, and the members of his church struggle with how to help their friend while also practicing radical love and acceptance. This offbeat and thoughtful comedy costars Patricia Clarkson. (PG-13)
