Is God in the War?

On Sunday, May 31, 1942, Dr. Adams gave the first in a special series of sermons focusing on Christian answers to questions about war. “The first question that the world situation raises to the religious mind is ‘Is God in the War’?” Dr. Adams suggested.

“Some people are saying it is God’s war. That is not a new thing to say about war. Many wars, especially those in which the Church was on one side, have been called holy wars. We are unconvinced that there is an important difference, in speaking of war, in saying that we are on God’s side or saying that God is on our side.”

“No war is God’s war. The revelation of God that is in Christ makes us sure that no war is God’s war. Even though all the right were on one side, no war would be God’s war. Even though the war were inevitable, no war would be God’s war. Even though great and lasting good should come from a war, no war would be God’s war. The reason is that war is not God’s method. Who that has meditated on the nature of God as he [God] is revealed in the life of Jesus can think that war, especially war as it is now waged, is God’s way of working out the problems of the world!”

The Spirit of God is present in times of war, Dr. Adams suggested, as “the One who can make the war serve some good, some eternal good.”

“Is God in this war?” was a burning question for citizens of the world in 1942 as it is in 2004. “The Psalmist (139) said, ‘If I make my bed in hell, behold thou art there.’ God is here with us in this war,” Dr. Adams concluded. “He [God] has not given us up, sinful though we are. His [God’s] Spirit is striving to show us the better way. His [God’s] presence is our comfort and our strength.” more
