Christian Answers to Questions About War

As a nation, we have once again celebrated our freedom and independence with splashes of red, white and blue painted across the night sky, with flags posted on front porches, backyard barbecues, and bittersweet glimpses of American soldiers on patrol thousands of miles from home. On Independence Day we remember names like Washington, Adams, Jefferson, and Franklin, and we honor their courage and vision. We are grateful that our founders pledged their lives and their sacred honor to create a free and independent America. But what price do we pay for this freedom?

On Sunday, December 7, 1941, True D. Morse, Chairman of the Board of Union Avenue Christian Church, was leading a meeting in the pastor’s study when the meeting was interrupted by a messenger who brought word of a news flash that the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor. Dr. Hampton Adams, senior minister of Union Avenue, was present for that meeting. Writing under the title “We Are in the War” in the December 12, 1941, issue of Our Church, Dr. Adams shared some of his personal insights concerning war with his congregation.

“A minister,” he wrote, “more than any other person, is responsible for helping to create the religious attitudes of church people. What should be the mind of Christian people as we find ourselves in a war, the end of which we cannot foresee? First of all we Christians should realize the necessity of developing our inward resources. The passing of the years with their increasing responsibilities has given to me this spiritual wisdom: Whereas in years past when I found myself facing unusual responsibilities and subject to great strain I would look about to see what I could do to strengthen my position, in these more recent times I have learned not to look about so much as to look within. The only strength that I can have is the strength of character and the strength of faith. All other strength is but a straw before the winds. When Ancient Israel found her own world crumbled beneath her, Ezekiel taught the people the strength of inwardness.” more
