Sound Wisdom from a Beloved Pastor

Other nuggets of wisdom included in his remarks: “Keep the minds of the members on big things.” Focusing concern on small affairs, he asserted, leads to bickering and dissension. “Missions, benevolence, Christian education, the kingdom of righteousness, truth, love, and peace are the big things,” he suggested.

Place responsibility in the hands of as many members as possible, he said. “We learn and love by doing.”

“Make the church inclusive,” he said, “for rich and poor, for saint and sinner, for liberal and conservative, for old and young, for the sad and the glad.” Deep in our hearts, he explained, we all have the same needs. “Happy [is] the church and the minister that can reach down beneath the superficial difference and serve the deepest yearnings and aspirations.”

“Put the young people forward,” he urged. “They are the church of tomorrow and should be a real part of the church of today. We need their spirit of dare and venture.”

With this wisdom as a guide, let us begin to search for and seek the face of Union Avenue Christian Church that shows to others the face of God.
