Living Life Forward by Understanding it Backward Where do we begin when setting out to place a face on something as complex and diverse as Union Avenue Christian Church? Do we look at the ministers who have served here in this place? Do we search for answers in the character and accomplishments of members, past and present? Do we infer characteristics from statistics? Do we seek clues in the eyes of our children? Just where do we begin? Søren Kierkegaard, the nineteenth-century Danish philosopher suggests that “we live life forward by understanding it backward.” Perhaps this wisdom provides a legitimate starting point, a place to begin. In the weeks and months to follow Our Church will look to place a face on Union Avenue Christian Church as it prepares for the start of the pastorate of the Reverend Dr. Suzanne Webb. In stories and profiles and historical essays, Our Church will attempt to define the present and peer into the future while looking back at the history of this congregation and the events that shaped this community of faith. “The study of history is not just an academic exercise,” notes G. Curtis Jones and Paul H. Jones in their book “500 Illustrations: Stories from Life for Preaching and Teaching.” “Rather, history functions for a people much like memory does for an individual.
