Folk Art Exhibit – Artist’s Reception October 14
Join us on Thursday, October 14 (6:30-8 pm), at an artist's reception for
"Inspired by Folk," the newest exhibit in the Gretchen Brigham Gallery of Union Avenue Christian Church, featuring authentic folk art pieces as well as more contemporary works inspired by the traditions of folk art, including spool furniture, tramp art, bottle cap art, and other items created with recycled material.
St. Louis artist Tom Lawless will be present to speak about his pieces in the gallery and his experience collecting folk art. The event will also include food, hands-on opportunities to try folkcraft, and activities for children.
More about the exhibit: Though much of folk craft today is collected as art, in fact most of it was produced for more utilitarian or decorative purposes such as advertising, toys, furniture, weather vanes, picture frames and the like. This exhibit features pieces by unknown artists as well as works by St. Louis artists Theresa Disney, Tim Leach, and Tommy Lawless.
The exhibit will be on display from September 26 through October 31 in the church's art gallery and is available for viewing during church office hours or on Sunday mornings.
