Union Avenue Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

In the Spirit of Giving…

 We have several opportunities to get into the giving spirit this Advent season as we undertake two special projects at Union Avenue Christian. 

Firstly, we will be collecting items to support Joe Hays and his classroom of fourth grade students at Herzog Elementary, one of our inner-city public schools.  Joe serves as part of the Teach for America program and is greatly in need of several things to help him keep his students motivated and learning. See the list below:

• Reams of plain white copier paper (this is a real need!)
• Incentive gifts for students (little items that can be purchased at the dollar store or dollar aisle at Target or Wal-mart.  Might include erasers, little toys, small notepads, etc.  Not Needed at this time: Pens/pencils/crayons/markers.)  
• 15 calculators (not dollar store calculators, but basic ones for use in the classroom).

Secondly, we are collecting items that will be used in health kits for guests of our Backdoor Food Closet.  These health kits, containing basic hygiene items, will be put together as part of our Advent Around the Tree all-church event on Sunday, December 20 at 9:30 AM in the Fellowship Room.  Needed items include:

•  Toothbrushes
• Travel size toothpaste
• bars of soap 
• travel/hotel size shampoo and soaps
• washcloths

We invite anyone to begin gathering items for both projects and deposit your contributions in the designated boxes in the Fellowship Room any time between now and December 20^th.  If you’d like to donate funds to either of these efforts, please contact the church office or Brian at brianskirk at yahoo.com.
