AGUA Presents “Flower Power”

Flower PowerThe Arts Group of Union Avenue unveiled its 2009 multimedia exhibition, “Flower Power,” today in the Gretchen Brigham Gallery. The exhibited works, which include paintings, drawings, etchings, fabric art, photography and sculpture, were selected by John Dyess, who served as juror for the exhibition. In his judge’s statement, Mr. Dyess wrote, “I viewed all the artwork … and read the call for entries prospectus before I began the selection process. The sentence from the prospectus, ‘Capture a mood, and send our souls soaring, just like the peaceful accompaniment to a jetliner floating through calm skies and wispy clouds … or a simple walk along a flowing river bank,’ was taken into consideration.

“The prize winning entries spoke to me during the first viewing. I was impressed by their execution, creativity and uniqueness,” he wrote. The award winners were: Best of Show – “Orchid Spray” by Barbara Umbogy; First Place – “Summer Pick” by Glenda Hares; Second Place – “Flowering Friendships” by Junko Eccles; Honorable Mentions – “Sunflower Ikebana” by Jerry Cox; “Reaching for the Sun” by Michael Frank; “Primavera” by Richard Woloszy; “Field of Poets” by Richard Woloszy; “Withering II” by Jill Welsh; and “The First of June” by Nancy Beard.

The exhibition will be on display in the Brigham Gallery through September 21, 2009. A reception will be hosted by AGUA Sunday, August 9, from noon to 2 p.m. Awards will be given at a 1 p.m. ceremony. Visitors wishing to view the exhibition are encouraged to call 314.361.8844 to determine if the Gallery is open for public viewing.
